India’s Great Rivers

An India river cruise is a gentle way into a country that can overwhelm by road. You sleep in the same cabin every night, eat well aboard, and step ashore into villages and temple towns that see few foreign visitors. Two rivers lead the way: the Ganges, sailed from Kolkata along its Hooghly branch, and the Brahmaputra in Assam.

The Ganges (Hooghly) from Kolkata

Cruises typically sail north from Kolkata through rural West Bengal. Highlights include the terracotta temples of Kalna, the brass-working villages near Matiari, the former colonial settlements along the river, and Murshidabad, once the seat of the Nawabs of Bengal. Many itineraries are combined with a land tour of Delhi, Agra and the Taj Mahal, Jaipur or Varanasi.

Cruise ship on the Ganges
Ganges cruise ships are small, often colonial in style.

Operators we have verified on the Ganges include Uniworld, whose all-suite Ganges Voyager II carries about 56 guests, Pandaw, which offers long Ganges and Brahmaputra expeditions, and Assam Bengal Navigation, a specialist that has run cruises on both rivers for more than 20 years.

The Brahmaputra in Assam

The Brahmaputra is one of the world’s great rivers, wide, braided and wild. Cruises in Assam focus on nature and culture: Kaziranga National Park, famous for its one-horned rhinoceros; Majuli, a huge river island known for its Vaishnavite monasteries, or satras; tea estates; and tribal villages. It is a quieter, more remote trip than the Ganges.

The river is getting more attention. The Official River Cruise Directory reported that Scenic Group has formed a long-term partnership with Assam Bengal Navigation and plans two river ships for its India program by 2029–30. We will keep this page updated as itineraries are announced.

When to Go

Both rivers are best in the cooler, drier months after the monsoon, roughly autumn through early spring. Summer is very hot and the monsoon brings heavy rain and high water. Seasons vary by operator, so ask us for current departure dates.

India River Cruise Questions

Do Ganges cruises go to Varanasi?

Most Ganges river cruises sail the Hooghly, a distributary of the Ganges, upriver from Kolkata, where the river is navigable for cruise ships. Varanasi is usually visited on land before or after the cruise. Some longer expedition itineraries go further; ask us for current routes.

What is the difference between a Ganges and a Brahmaputra cruise?

The Ganges (Hooghly) trip is about Bengal’s history: colonial towns, terracotta temples and the old Nawab capital of Murshidabad. The Brahmaputra trip, in Assam in India’s northeast, is more about nature and tribal culture: tea gardens, river island monasteries and national parks known for one-horned rhinos.

Is alcohol served on India river cruises?

Generally yes, but some states restrict alcohol. Bihar, for example, does not permit it, which affects longer Ganges itineraries passing through the state. Your cruise line will explain any local rules.
